2007 Voyage to Kure Atoll Update
The Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society is preparing to fulfill
their mission of responsible stewardship for the preservation of a
special part of the Hawaiian Archipelago, known as the Northwestern
Hawaiian Marine National Monument. Over the last five years the HOCVS
has paddled a traditional outrigger canoe from the Big Island of Hawaii
to Mokumanamana (Necker) in an effort to bring awareness to the issues
of the Northwest Islands. We are preparing for the last leg of the
adventure with a voyage to Kure Atoll. Through our commitment to emphasize
the fragile ecosystem of all the islands, we have reached, to date,
over five hundred thousand people with stories of the sea life, birds,
and the beauty of these remote waters and islands.
This year's voyage will add the issue of Marine Debris as its educational
centerpiece. Upon completion of the paddling portion of the voyage,
crew members will assist in the clean up and disposal of marine debris
within the Northwest Hawaiian Island Marine Monument. This voyage
and clean up are a costly undertaking with an overall budget of approximately
$160,000. Each of the (16) paddlers has been asked to raise a minimum
of $10,000 to help underwrite the cost of this voyage. We passionately
believe our voyage and resulting educational efforts will serve as
a legacy for future generations. If the effort to preserve and protect
this part of the island chain is to be successful, it will only happen
if people know, see, and hear about these places and understand what
makes them special and unique.
We need your support in order to reach our goal and complete our August
voyage to Kure. Your contribution will be tax deductible, as we are
